The name is an abbreviation of body protection compound, the designation given to the larger protein whose sequence this fragment reproduces. That parent protein was identified in gastric juice, and the 157 refers to the specific fragment catalogued from it rather than to a residue position.

Because the molecule is a fragment rather than a full protein, it does not fold into a defined tertiary structure the way a globular protein does. In solution a short linear peptide of this kind is more accurately described as conformationally flexible, sampling many states rather than holding one.

BPC-157 carries no acylation and no non-proteinogenic residues. That absence is worth stating explicitly because it distinguishes the molecule from the engineered analogues elsewhere in the catalogue, where such modifications are the defining feature.

Nomenclature and registry codes

BPC-157 appears in the literature under the code PL 14736, and occasionally as bepecin. The multiplicity of names is typical for a compound catalogued by more than one group, and searches benefit from covering all three.

It is also written as BPC 157 without the hyphen, and as PL-14736 with one. Database searches treat these as distinct strings, so a search returning nothing under one form is not evidence of absence.

The compound is supplied as an acetate salt, which is the usual isolation form for peptides of this kind. The salt affects the mass weighed out but not the identity of the peptide, and the certificate's peptide content figure is what reconciles the two.

What is characterized in a laboratory

Identity is confirmed by mass spectrometry against the theoretical mass of the fifteen-residue sequence. For a peptide this short the measurement is unambiguous — there is little room for a mass to coincide with anything but the intended molecule.

Purity is measured by high-performance liquid chromatography, reported as the main peak's area against total peak area. Short unmodified peptides typically give clean chromatograms; where impurities appear they are usually deletion sequences missing a single residue, which elute close to the main peak.

Amino acid analysis is sometimes reported alongside. It hydrolyses the peptide and quantifies the constituent amino acids, giving an orthogonal confirmation of composition that does not rely on the same instrument as the mass measurement.

Lyophilization leaves the peptide as a solid cake. A dried peptide is considerably more stable than the same material in solution, which is why it ships this way and why ambient transit is acceptable.

Reconstitution arithmetic

Concentration is mass divided by volume. A 5 mg vial with 1 ml of diluent gives 5 mg per ml; a 10 mg vial with the same 1 ml gives 10 mg per ml; the 10 mg vial with 2 ml returns to 5 mg per ml.

The diluent is generally bacteriostatic water, whose 0.9% benzyl alcohol permits a vial to be entered more than once. Preservative-free sterile water is used where a single entry is planned.

Reconstituted BPC-157 is held refrigerated and used within the window the receiving facility's protocols set. Repeated freeze-thaw cycling is avoided as a matter of routine.

Short unmodified peptides are generally more robust in the dried state than long acylated ones, but that robustness does not extend to solution. Once reconstituted the same handling discipline applies as for anything else in the catalogue.

How to read the certificate of analysis

The certificate records what an independent facility measured for one batch of BPC-157. The lot number on the document must match the vial; a certificate for a different lot describes different material.

Identity appears as observed versus theoretical molecular mass for the fifteen-residue sequence. Purity appears as the HPLC main-peak percentage with the chromatogram attached, so the separation can be inspected rather than taken on trust.

Peptide content, where reported, accounts for the acetate counter-ion and residual water. It is the figure that determines how much peptide a nominal 5 mg or 10 mg actually represents, and it is routinely lower than the vial's nominal mass.
